Christmas data: Senior infants

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

We chose our favourite Christmas things.  Teacher didn't give us the choice of Santa or presents because then our chart wouldn't be fair...everyone would choose the same thing.  Look at the things we like best:

Height in Junior Infants

Today we learned about tall and short.  We compared all the children in our class and decided who was the taller.  We learned that people were taller than some children but were shorter than other children in the class.

Then we all lined ourselves up in order of shortest to tallest.
We learned that Ezekiel is the tallest boy in our class.

Thick and thin: Junior Infants

We sorted all the books in our library.  We decided it would be a good idea to put all the thick books on the bottom and the thin books on the top.  It was hard work because we had lots of books to sort but we DID IT!!!

Thick books in one pile and thin in another.

Ask us to do some sorting at home we are very good at it now.

2D shapes: Senior Infants

We are learning about 2D shapes at the moment. As well as identifying a square, circle, rectangle and triangle we also learned how to count the number of sides and corners each shape has. We saw that a circle has no corners at all. Then we made some lovely shape pictures using squares, circles, rectangles and triangles. Lastly, we played a shape game. Teacher put a lot of assorted shapes into a feely bag. One person came up and had to pick a shape from inside the bag but they couldn't look at it or show it to the rest of the class. They had to describe the shape in their hands by feeling it ie. my shape has 3 corners and three sides, what shape am I? Whoever guessed correctly came up next. We are getting really good at this game now.

Maths activities: Senior Infants

We love Maths in Room 3 and we do lots of different Maths activities each day. At the moment we are doing a lot of work with number lines. We have a fun jumping on game that we play in class to help us practise moving forwards and backwards on the number line. First teacher puts a giant number line down on the floor and she divides us into two teams. A person from each team is chosen and each person has to pick a card and follow the instructions e.g. Jump on 1, jump on 2, jump on 3, go back 1 etc. The first person to reach number 10 wins and then we begin the game again with two new people. We are getting really good at counting using the number line.

Patterns: Senior Infants

We are back at school and settled in to our new Senior Infants class. Last week we were talking about patterns and making patterns. We made patterns using bears, links, elephants and cubes. We also made patterns on our Interactive whiteboard where we dragged and dropped animals to create a pattern. We will search at home for something with a pattern on it and bring it in to teacher.

Learning about round shapes: Junior infants

We hid two balls around the classroom and tried to find them.  They big ball was easy to spot but the small one was not so easy.  It was ON top of the whiteboard.  We found the small one later under the table but on top of the chair.

Learning about 2D & 3D shapes: Senior Infants

We are learning all about shapes. We talked about 2D shapes: circle, square, rectangle and triangle.
We talked about 3D shapes: cube, sphere, cuboid, triangular prism, cone, triangular pyramid, square pyramid, hexagonal prism, cylinder.
We used the boxes of shapes to talk about our shapes.  We counted sides and corners, talked about big and small, thick and thin, colours, whether a shape rolls or not, and what 2D shapes can be found in 3D shapes.

Space Data: Senior Infants

We have learned a lot about all the different planets.  Today we had to choose our favourite one, and give the reason why we liked our one the best.  We had our eyes closed while our friends were choosing, so it was very interesting to see how our chart looked in the end.  Mrs. Newell's class also joined in and chose their favourite planets too.

Counting stick and human number line: Senior Infants

In Maths we have a counting stick that we use to practicing saying our numbers between 0 and 10. Each number has its place on the stick, and we say the number as teacher points to the stick. Then we take it in turns to be the teacher with the counting stick. We also have plastic numbers that teacher gives out and we have to arrange ourselves into a human number line. Then teacher asks other children to find numbers in the number line and when we find it we take the number off the person holding it and they sit down. We can also find numbers before or after a number or even a number between two numbers. We love using the counting sticks and human number line!

Maths trail-Maths Week, Senior Infants

We went on a Maths Trail for Maths week. We had to count trees, look at the colour of the lines on the road, look for berries, seeds, pick a leaf and look for shapes, square, circle, diamond, star, and rectangle. We recorded our findings. It was great fun!
