3D shapes

We know which shapes can roll and which can not.
We had fun playing a game to guess which shape might be the one that is being described.

3D shapes

We have been learning all about 3-D shape in Maths. We can recognise a cube, cuboid, cylinder and sphere in the environment. We can count the faces, corners and edges on the shapes that have them and we know that spheres and cylinders can roll easily, but a cube and cuboid cannot roll.We know that all the faces on a cube have to be squares. We also played a shape game where someone had to put their hand into a bag of various 3-D shapes and pick one  and feel it (without seeing it) and then they had to describe its properties to the rest of the class. Whoever guessed correctly got to come up and take the next turn. We love playing this game.We also learned a shape song to help us remember what each 3-d shape looks like.

Hour of code: Computer programming

We joined a worldwide event of computer programming today.
We learned to code!
Try it out at home.....We can teach you too!
This is the coding we did:

Number stories

We started looking at number stories today.
We had a good look at the number 3.
We found all the different stories that are in the number 3:
0+3=3, 1+2=3. 2+1=3 and 3+0=3
We have lots of different things to help us figure out the stories.
We use magnetic strips with magnets, matchsticks with hoops, counters with hoops, beads on a string, hangers and pegs, and Zak and Zelma with their sweets.
We will be talking a lot about number stories this year (especially the number story for 10)

The Planets data chart

Now that we know the names of all the planets and a little about each, teacher let us choose our favourite planet.  These are our choices.
We enjoyed talking about which planet was the most/least popular and by how much, we added groups of planets and compared those and we chatted about reasons why we made the choices that we did.

Maths trail

We took advantage of the lovely Autumn weather in October and went outside to do a maths trail. Firstly, we had to put ourselves into groups of three and decide who the leader was in each group - we are getting very good at doing this without arguing! We had to bring a book to lean on and a pencil for writing our answers on the answer sheet. Before we left the class room teacher explained all of the questions to us. We had to look for and find lots of different things such as a sign with a red and a black rectangle, a red berry, a silver car and write down its registration number. We found lots of shapes near the recycling bank. We had great fun and enjoyed working in teams.

More Hallowe'en data

We have been voting as to our favourite Hallowe'en things.
The results are interesting.
We love chatting about the different groups, which is the largest/smallest group, how many more/less are in each group, how many altogether etc.
We are really getting good at interpreting data.

Hallowe'en Data Chart

Today for Maths we made a data chart of our favourite Halloween things. It was great fun and we had to wait until near the very end to see which thing would win!!The witches and bats were battling for 1st position, but in the end the bats won!! We talked about how the bats were the most popular, and how the ghosts were the least popular. We counted how many children chose each thing, and how many more children would be needed to pick the skeletons, ghosts, pumpkins and witches for them to draw or win. We are very good at interpreting data charts now!!!

Number line activities

We are loving Maths Week.
Today we did some numberline jumping.
Teacher told us a sum like 2+3=?
We had to figure out where to start on the numberline (2).
Then everyone had to guess, then show teacher on our number fans, where we think we would land if we took the next number (3) of jumps.
We loved guessing and we loved jumping.
Numberlines are fun!
We also made a human number line and then teacher called out a story like:
I had 2 fish and dad bought me 3 more.  How many fish did I have then.
If we guessed or figured out the right answer then we could take the place on the numberline of the child who was holding this number.
Some of the stories were happy stories (addition) and some were much sadder (subtraction).
We also had turns at finding the number before, after or between numbers.
We are good at number line quizes!
