Christmas data in Senior infants
Friday, 16th December 2011
Today we chatted about our favourite Christmas things.
Of course we all love Santa and Christmas presents, but these weren't choices for us.
Look at what we chose:
We counted and compared the groups, saw which had most and least, saw "how many more" or "how many less" there were in some groups as compared with others.
We learned lots of maths from this activity.

More work with the numberline
After jumping along the numberline yesterday, we moved on to using a smaller numberline and jumping along it with our fingers. It is a really easy way of figuring out difficult puzzles, like what do you get if you add 3 and 5!

Addition: Jumping on the number line, Senior infants
We are learning to add two numbers together by jumping on the number line.
We have a hopscotch number line in our classroom. Teacher asks us a question (like 3+4), we have to figure out the answer in our head, then jump along the number line to see if we have got the right answer.
This is a lot of fun, and we get the answer right almost every time.

Using our class for addition: Senior infants
WE USED 2 HOOPS AND OUR CLASS MADE UP DIFFERENT SUMS BY JUMPING IN AND OUT OF THE HOOPS........2+2 MAKES 4! 0+4 MAKES 4!
Shoe sorting in Senior infants
We all took off our shoes and teacher mixed them up. Each team raced to see how long it took to put each pair together again! We loved this game!

Tall and Short in Junior infants
We learned alot about sizes. We identified the tall and short children in the class. We learned Oliwer is the tallest person in our class ( besides teacher, even though its a close call :) )and Eireann is the smallest person in the class.
We had great fun sorting ourselves according to size.
small and BIG in Junior infants
We were learning all about size. Teacher had a bit of a problem with her library. It was very messy. We worked very very hard and sorted the books by size. We had a pile for the small books, the medium size books and the BIG books. We sorted the books into these three piles and then put them on the book shelves. The top shelf is for small books, the middle shelf is for medium size books and the bottom shelf is for the big books. We think the hard work paid off because we have a lovely looking library now and we can see all the books.
Length in Junior infants
We were learning about long and short.
We sorted things that were long together, and things that we short together.
We made our very own long and short lines out of lots of different things in the classroom.

The story of 5, Senior Infants
We are working on the story of 5 at the moment in Maths. Today we used 5 pegs on hangers to work out all the ways of making 5. We were able to work out and write down all the combinations ourselves. Teacher is so proud of us for working so hard!!!

Numbers in Junior infants
We are learning to recognise and form numbers. We play number hunting games, number detective and lots more. We love making numbers out of play doh and forming the numbers in our books. We learn a little poem to help us remember how to make the number.
So far we have learned the number one.
Straight line down
and then we're done
thats how to make
the number one
Number 1 is like a stick.
A straight line that is very quick.
And we have also learned the number 2.
Around and back
On the railroad tack.
Two, two,
Two, two
For number 2, go right around.
Then make a line across the ground.
Pattern work in Senior infants
We are getting really good at making patterns using beads, bears, cubes, pegs and links and deciding what comes next in a pattern. Here we are doing some more pattern work on the whiteboard.
2D shapes in Senior infants
We have been learning about 2-d shapes. We made some shape pictures by ourselves using squares, circles, rectangles, triangles, Then we worked with a partner and put all our shapes together to make a new shape picture. We learned that a square and rectangle both have four sides and four corners. A triangle has three sides and three corners and a circle has one curved side and no corners.
