Maths - Learning about shapes
2D and 3D shapes activities
We have been learning a lot about 2D shapes: squares, circles, rectangles, triangles, ovals and hexagons and 3D shapes: cubes, cuboids, spheres, cylinders, triangular prisms, pyramids and cones.
Here are some of the activities we play at Maths time to help us find out more about the shapes. We play with logic attribute blocks, Make "n" break game, tangrams, guess the 3D shape and the shapes loop game.
When we have free play time in the morning we like making shapes from some of the other activities too.

Number games for Senior Infants
In Room 5 we are playing lots of number games. We play games that use a die like the Spotty Dog game, the Ladybird game and snakes and ladders. We also play a "more than" card game and a fish bingo game (that uses fish instead of a die). We play these games during Maths Activity time. We learn lots about numbers when we play these games.

Halloween Maths
Today in Room 5 we had a long chat about things we think about when we talk of Halloween. We each had to choose the Halloween thing we like best. We made a chart of our favourite Halloween things, and we talked about which group had the most/least/how many more or less did each group had. Our chart looks great.

In Room 5 we are learning about numbers. We have lots of great number activities. Today we played hopscotch (saying the number as we jumped), dominoes, comparison dominoes-the highest domino each time wins, comparison cards-highest card each time wins, and the tree game. Each group will get a different activity each day.

Maths: Data
Senior Infants, Room 5
Yesterday, September 15th, teacher read us the story of "The Smartest Giant in Town". Today we did some voting. Each of us had to choose who we thought deserved the giant's clothes the most - maybe the giraffe because he might catch a cold with no scarf, maybe the goat who had no sail for his boat, maybe the mouse who had no home for herself and her children, maybe the fox who had no sleeping bag, or maybe the dog who was stuck in the bog. It was a very fair vote, and we made a chart of our results.

Shapes Loop game
Thursday, 11th September.
Senior Infants, Room 5.
We talked a lot today about shapes and colours. We learned about circles, squares, rectangles, triangles and hexagons. Hexagons have 6 sides and are very hard to draw. When we knew the names of the shapes we played a great loop game. It took us 4 minutes and 29 seconds to finish. We will get much faster as we practise more.

Maths activities in Senior Infants, Room 5
Maths Activities
Monday, 8th September
Last week in our Maths activities we sorted all sorts of groups according to colours. We used bottle tops, counters, links, sorting basket and links.2008
This week our activities are different, even though we are using some of the same things. This week we are looking at colours and patterns in Maths. We use pegs, counters, links, pattern blocks and beads to follow patterns. It is fun. We can make our patterns even longer than teachers!

Bugs and Insects: Sorting and Classifying
Bugs and Insects
Friday, 4th April, 2008
We had a great talk about bugs and insects.
We found out that insects have only 6 legs.
Now we know whether a bug is an insect or not.
We decided to sort out our box of bugs.
We put the insects in one group and the other bugs in the other group. Then we sorted all our bugs according to colour…..
...whether they have wings or not…..…..whether they eat grass or other insects/animals...….whether they have one colour or more than one colour...

It was very interesting.

Making 3D shapes
3D Shapes, Monday, 18th February, 2008
We made 3D shapes from matchsticks and blue tack.
Can you see our cube, our triangular pyramid and our square pyramid?

The pyramids were both stronger than the cube when teacher pushed down on them with her hand.
We tried making the shapes with marshmallows too. That was fun but very messy. Marshmallows are so sticky!
