Using counters to learn about numbers: Senior Infants

Friday, January 28th, 2011
Today we were making patterns with counters.  With just 4 counters each, look at some of the interesting patterns we made.  We were just proving that 4 counters are always 4 counters, no matter how we have them arranged (sometimes a difficult concept when we are young).

Patterns in Junior infants

This week we have been talking about patterns in Maths. There are lots of patterns all around us. Patterns on tiles on the floor and walls, patterns on clothes, patterns on animals. We made patterns this week using shapes and colours. Today we were working in pairs and on our own to make patterns. We made patterns with pegboards, counters, beads, blocks and straws. You have to read a pattern to see what comes next. We really enjoyed making patterns and working together to complete a pattern.

More houses data: Senior infants

Today we talked some more about houses.  Today's data chart was about the type of house that each of us actually lives in.  Here is what today's chart looks like.

The story of 6 in Senior Infants

Last week we were working on the story of 6. We used lots of concrete materials to help us work out all the various ways of making six (cubes, teddies, counters, lollipop sticks). As the week progressed we were able to work out the story of 6 all by ourselves and to record our answers as we went along. Here are some pictures of us working out the story of 6 using 6 pegs on a clothes hanger!!

Houses Data Chart: Senior Infants

We are learning all about different kinds of houses.  We talked about the advantages and disadvantages to living in different kinds of homes.   Then we got to choose which type of house we would like to live in.  We made a DataChart of the results.  Looks like most of our Mammies and Daddies will have to move to a house boat or a three story house, because these are the types of houses we like the best!!

Maths games in Second Class

Every week we play different maths games.

Halves in Second Class

We use different materials to practice splitting numbers in half.
