Measuring up in First Class

We recently learned two new words, length and width, and have been learning all about them. We learned how to measure the length and the width of many different things both in the classroom and at home. We have used a variety of objects to measure length and width including cubes, crayons, lego, straws, lollipop sticks and even a cut out of our hand span. We're not yet sure if these are good things to measure with or if we can find a more useful way to measure so check back soon and we will let you know what we discovered!!

We started to play go fish. We each take turns and turning a fish over, we count the dots on the fish and match it to the number in the bowl. If we dont have that number we keep fishing until we fill the bowl with fish. e are getting very good at taking turns and helping each other in a nice way without getting angry if someone forgets how to play.

After jumping along the numberline yesterday, we moved on to using a smaller numberline and jumping along it with our fingers. It is a really easy way of figuring out difficult puzzles, like what do you get if you add 3 and 5!

We are learning to add two numbers together by jumping on the number line.
We have a hopscotch number line in our classroom. Teacher asks us a question (like 3+4), we have to figure out the answer in our head, then jump along the number line to see if we have got the right answer.
This is a lot of fun, and we get the answer right almost every time.

We learned alot about sizes. We identified the tall and short children in the class. We learned Oliwer is the tallest person in our class ( besides teacher, even though its a close call :) )and Eireann is the smallest person in the class.

We were learning all about size. Teacher had a bit of a problem with her library. It was very messy. We worked very very hard and sorted the books by size. We had a pile for the small books, the medium size books and the BIG books. We sorted the books into these three piles and then put them on the book shelves. The top shelf is for small books, the middle shelf is for medium size books and the bottom shelf is for the big books. We think the hard work paid off because we have a lovely looking library now and we can see all the books.

We are learning to recognise and form numbers. We play number hunting games, number detective and lots more. We love making numbers out of play doh and forming the numbers in our books. We learn a little poem to help us remember how to make the number.

We are getting really good at making patterns using beads, bears, cubes, pegs and links and deciding what comes next in a pattern. Here we are doing some more pattern work on the whiteboard.

We have been learning about 2-d shapes. We made some shape pictures by ourselves using squares, circles, rectangles, triangles, Then we worked with a partner and put all our shapes together to make a new shape picture. We learned that a square and rectangle both have four sides and four corners. A triangle has three sides and three corners and a circle has one curved side and no corners.

We are all excited about Halloween. We are doing lots of Halloween art and crafts, and learning lots of Halloween words in Irish. Today we made a Halloween data chart.

We each got to choose what we like best about Halloween (when it wasn't our turn we kept our eyes closed so we wouldn't see what the others had chosen). We talked lots about which was the most/least popular group, how many were in each group, how many more/less were in the different groups. Which would you have chosen if you were in our class?

Titch The Witch asked us to share our favourite things about Halloween with her. We decided the best way to do this was with pictures and using a chart. Each picture represented something about Halloween.

We each had a turn to pick our favourite picture. Then we hid it so we would not just copy our neighbours favourite thing.

We had lots of questions and the chart answered them all for us.

There were 15 children in school today. Most of the children thought trick or treating was the best thing about Halloween ( the sweets represent this). Only one person liked all the spooky things about Halloween.

We've practiced finding things of different colour and we were fantastic. Teacher's toys got all jumbled up so we needed to help her sort them out. Luckily we are all ready good at sorting now and we fixed all the beads and pegs into sorting trays by colour.

We love playing number detective with our number fans. Teacher calls a number and we find that number hidden in the fan.

We have been keeping an eye on the weather. Every day we put out our weather stick, with a thermometer, rain gauge and flower kite. Before home time we check the temperature, amount of rain that fell during the school day and how windy it is. We record these on our daily weather chart.

Today we took all this information and made a data chart. We talked about the type of weather most and least common this September, the amount of days with each weather type, and how many more or less days of one kind than of another. Here are our results:

We also played a wonderful shape recognition game where we had to match up squares, rectangles, triangles, ovals and semi-circles. Semi-circle was a new word we learned today and we discovered that if we put two semi-circles together that we got a circle!!

We are having a lot of fun with numbers. Today we took out the number hopscotch and teacher played games with it. We played a game where one person from each team had to compete to find and stand on the number teacher called. The team with the most wins was the winning team.

The other game we played was called "sound of a number". Teacher dropped crayons into a tin, we had to listen well and then figure out how many crayons were in the tin. This took quite a lot of concentration.

We made a human numberline from 0 to 9 with our number fans.

Teacher gives one person a task: to find the number 5 (for example), or to find the number after 8 etc.

If that person can find the right number they can now take the card and join the numberline in the correct place, while the original number holder has to sit down.

Everyone got lots of turns at this game. It was fun.

In Maths we have been learning about heavy and light. Before we used the balancing scales teacher asked us to lift certain items in each of our hands and we had to compare the weights of the two and say which felt the heaviest and which felt the lightest. Have a look at us. Then we used the balancing scales and we had to compare the weight of two items also. We had to guess first which item we thought would be the heaviest. The heavier item went down on the scales and the lighter item went up.We loved using the balancing scales!!

We are learning lots about water with Mr. Donohue. He brought us in a plant to look after and water. We hope it grows well for us. We did more measuring with a jug, a saucepan and other containers. We are noticing that alot of things have patterns on them, carpets, tiles, clothes, shoes, toys, wallpaper and lots more. We had great fun with patterns. Teacher made a pattern and put it under the visualiser and we tried to copy the pattern. We started with some very simple patterns and then they became more difficult. We were very good at it but we had to concentrate very hard to get some of them.

We have been busy measuring in Maths over the past few days with informal units of measurement (such as measuring with cubes, lollipop sticks and handspans). An important part of this activity is estimating first what we think the answer is going to be. It was great fun guessing beforehand and it didn't matter if our guess was right or wrong. We did our best to make a sensible guess. Once we made our guess and recorded it we then measured the object to see if our answer was correct. We worked individually at times and we also worked with a partner. Have a look at us at busy at work!!!

Today we set up a small shop in the classsroom. Some of us were shopkeepers and the rest of us were customers. The shopkeepers had to display their goods and prices and answer any questions the customers had. They also had to make sure they received the correct amount of money for their sales.

The customers had to decide what they wanted to buy with their money and count it out before giving it to the shopkeeper. We used 1c ,2c and 5c coins . We changed roles after all our money was spent so everyone got a chance to role play the shopkeeper and customer.

Today we were very lucky to be given a new digital camera for our classroom and a very modern Ladybug Visual Presenter. The Ladybug is a little camera that teacher can use to zoom in on anything and the live image will appear on the board. Today we used it in Maths class. Miss Ferguson made patterns and shapes using blocks and the class had to make the same shapes with their own set. We loved using our new equipmentt :)

We are learning all about 3-D shape.s The main 3-d shapes we are concentrating on are cubes, cuboids, cylinders and spheres. We identified these shapes in the environment and we also brought in some more examples of these shapes from home. We are practising counting the faces, edges and corners (if applicable) of these shapes. We play a game with teacher where we have to feel a 3-shape in the feely bag (we can't look at it) and we have to feel it and describe what we are feeling. The rest of the class have to guess what shape it is. We give as much information about the shape as possible. For example if we are holding a cube we might say 'the shape in my hand has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 corners. All the faces are squares. Whoever guesses correctly comes up next and picks another shape from the bag. We also experimented with which 3-d shapes could roll and which ones couldn't. We discovered that the corners aren't helpful when trying to roll a shape with corners!! Cylinders and spheres roll very well whereas cubes and cuboids don't roll at all. We also used 3-d shapes to make things. We worked in groups and had great fun.

What's the time in Senior infants

We are learning to tell the time and we are getting really good at it. We practise every day and we have a large white clock hanging up in our classroom and we look at it at regular intervals and see if we can say what time it is. We also made our own 'cat' clocks so that we could practise telling the time at home. In P.E. this week we played 'What time is it Mr. Wolf?'. It's a very exciting game and all that running away from the wolf helps to keep us fit!!

Today we were making patterns with counters. With just 4 counters each, look at some of the interesting patterns we made. We were just proving that 4 counters are always 4 counters, no matter how we have them arranged (sometimes a difficult concept when we are young).

We sorted all the books in our library. We decided it would be a good idea to put all the thick books on the bottom and the thin books on the top. It was hard work because we had lots of books to sort but we DID IT!!!

We are learning about 2D shapes at the moment. As well as identifying a square, circle, rectangle and triangle we also learned how to count the number of sides and corners each shape has. We saw that a circle has no corners at all. Then we made some lovely shape pictures using squares, circles, rectangles and triangles. Lastly, we played a shape game. Teacher put a lot of assorted shapes into a feely bag. One person came up and had to pick a shape from inside the bag but they couldn't look at it or show it to the rest of the class. They had to describe the shape in their hands by feeling it ie. my shape has 3 corners and three sides, what shape am I? Whoever guessed correctly came up next. We are getting really good at this game now.

We love Maths in Room 3 and we do lots of different Maths activities each day. At the moment we are doing a lot of work with number lines. We have a fun jumping on game that we play in class to help us practise moving forwards and backwards on the number line. First teacher puts a giant number line down on the floor and she divides us into two teams. A person from each team is chosen and each person has to pick a card and follow the instructions e.g. Jump on 1, jump on 2, jump on 3, go back 1 etc. The first person to reach number 10 wins and then we begin the game again with two new people. We are getting really good at counting using the number line.

We are back at school and settled in to our new Senior Infants class. Last week we were talking about patterns and making patterns. We made patterns using bears, links, elephants and cubes. We also made patterns on our Interactive whiteboard where we dragged and dropped animals to create a pattern. We will search at home for something with a pattern on it and bring it in to teacher.
